Our heritage
Did you know that our founding company produced corks? Or that Mazda not only sounds like the surname of its founder but is also the name of the god of wisdom and reason in West Asia?
Jujiro Matsuda founded the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company in Hiroshima, Japan in 1920. And from a cork factory, Mazda would emerge 11 years later as a promising and exciting automobile manufacturer.
At first, the automobile company produced small eight-wheeled lorries and the first passenger car - the R360 Coupé - was introduced to the market in 1960. In 1963, we reached the milestone of one million vehicles produced. But we've come a long way since then and we now produce one million vehicles each year.
