My greatest thrill...

Scaling a 1,000m vertical rockface

Pro climber Steve Mcclure, famous for his 'bat hang' technique - dangling upside down off rock faces to shake blood into his arms during ascents - tells us his greatest thrill...

"A friend of mine told me about this place in Southern Greenland with a sheer rockface, 1,000m high. It was in this incredibly remote region called Igdlorssit Havn. The wall itself had no name, and no one had ever climbed it before using the route we were planning to take. So conquering it would be quite a challenge. It took two of us 15 days to get to the top of the wall - 15 days of continuous vertical climbing. Nights were spent on a portaledge, which is a deployable hanging tent with a sleeping platform. The whole process was like a war of attrition on this awesome, unforgiving wall. The climb itself must have been a 9a+, which is the hardest confirmed grade for rock climbing. When we finally got to the top, the view was spectacular, as was the sense of achievement. I remember being up there and thinking that this place was somewhere really, really special." Now that's Zoom-Zoom...
