Mazda2 Gram Strategy

Every generation of superminis seems to gets bigger, fatter and heavier. Not the Mazda2

New car buyers are mostly offered a selection of vehicles that drink fuel like it's going out of fashion, struggle to corner easily, and take decades to reach any level of speed. Doesn't sound very super does it? Or very mini.

The Mazda2 is different. Today's Mazda2 is actually smaller and lighter than its predecessor, almost 100kg lighter. That's like having a rugby forward jump out of your car. You can just imagine what this does for drivability: improved agility and handling, sporty performance and excellent acceleration. It also makes the Mazda2 more fuel-efficient while CO2 emissions are lower than ever.

So how does Mazda keep the weight down? Our engineers looked to the Mazda MX-5 for inspiration and followed the roadster's "gram strategy" approach to design. This meant every aspect of the car's makeup was checked and double-checked for excess- without compromising on safety or driving dynamics.

The use of lightweight, thinner ultra-high tensile steel was increased in the Mazda2 to support body shell rigidity. This alone enabled a 20 per cent reduction in weight while the electrics, suspension and exhaust were also altered. Even the door speakers were changed to save weight. That's true dedication.

It all makes for a lighter and stronger car: what more could you ask for?
