Lighter, stronger, cleverer
The Mazda2
Looking to the Mazda MX-5 for inspiration, we followed the roadster's "gram strategy" approach to design. This meant every aspect of the car's construction was double-checked for excess weight, without ever compromising on safety or driving dynamics.
The use of lightweight, thinner ultra-high tensile steel was increased in the 2007 Mazda2 to support body shell rigidity. The electrics, suspension and exhaust were altered. Even the door speakers were changed to save weight. We managed the remarkable feat of reducing the 1st Generation model's weight by 100 kilos, yet making it stronger and more rigid. This produced a driving experience that was more nimble and sporty than was thought possible in such a compact car.
For the latest version, we've kept the weight down, revised suspension systems ensures the rear stays planted, ride comfort and driving dynamics have never been better.
Our relentless search for improvement has also led to an up to 5% reduction in CO2 emissions. Fuel economy is, as ever, highly competitive and the Mazda2 is still a great choice for the environmentally conscious, with all the engines Euro Stage 5 compliant.
