Mazda MX-5 Gram Strategy

Mazda MX-5 Gram Strategy

Every gram counts. This is one of the core philosophies of the engineering team behind your Mazda MX-5.

The production of the world's number one roadster has been based on this belief since the first model was released in 1989. What's the point in creating a sports car that only half delivers? The Mazda MX-5 is, and always has been, about the delivery of pure driving pleasure. The joy of motoring.

Why is lightness so important? Because running, turning and stopping depends on it. The Mazda MX-5 is a pure two-seat roadster - and unashamedly so. We believe the thrill of driving a classic sports car depends on control. The lighter the car, and the better distribution of this weight, the better control.

You might say this commitment to weight-loss borders on the obsessive. And you'd be right. For example, a full redesign of the rear-view mirror snipped just 23g off the car's weight. Not much in itself perhaps - about the weight of a couple of bags of crisps - but this nipping and tucking throughout the design process adds up to something important in the overall drive of the car. A meticulous desire within our engineering team has resulted in the perfect roadster. The world's best-selling, in fact.

Weight reduction also comes through the materials used. New, high-strength, low-weight steel has been utilised where possible while in some cases, steel has even been replaced with lighter materials.

Because of this, despite the improvements to performance and comfort, the model you can buy today is only 10kg heavier than the previous Mazda MX-5. As almost all other cars get fatter, bigger and bulkier, the Mazda MX-5 has kept its trim figure.

Slim, beautiful and fun, the Mazda MX-5 keeps it simple with unadulterated roadster performance.
